  • [H3] Reducing violence through more effective conflict resolution DCAF has been supporting the Honduran National police to construct a new internal protocol on conflict resolution. Once finalised, it will be part of a police training toolkit that includes a self-assessment guide on the use of force and how to de-escalate and prevent violence before it happens. The Protocol was created with a team of experienced local officers and inputs from the Ministry for Human Rights. It will be shared in the coming months across the country with national police officers working in local community. 27 Mar 2024
  • [H3] Promoting mental health in the armed forces After collaborating with the Ministry of Defence of Georgia to develop a strategic programme on suicide prevention, we are now supporting its implementation. It was great to be in Tbilisi recently to join the lively discussion about the results of the piloting phase. Good mental health among troops is a sensitive and sometimes difficult topic, but it is critical to maintaining the reputation, integrity, effectiveness, and efficiency of the armed forces. This work is possible thanks to the support of the UK Ministry of Defence and UK Embassy in Tbilisi, and our Georgian partner, the Civil Council on Defense and Security. 26 Mar 2024
  • [H3] Talking good governance at the World Police Summit DCAF was pleased to join thousands of law enforcement leaders from around the globe at this year’s World Police Summit in Dubai. Senior SSR Advisor Paulo Costa gave a keynote speech about achieving good governance by reinforcing police integrity and legitimacy. The Head of our Latin America and the Caribbean Unit, Cristina Hoyos, spoke to attendees about building trust between citizens and the police and its fundamental role in effective security policy and crime prevention. 25 Mar 2024
  • [H3] Gender training for Peace Support Operations This week DCAF was at the Tanzanian Peacekeeping Training Centre in Dar es Salaam delivering a specialized course on gender issues in peacekeeping missions. In partnership with the European Security and Defence College, we trained 40 Tanzanian military personnel learned about the critical role that gender plays in security sector reform and governance initiatives, and in disarmament, demobilization, and reintegration (DDR) processes. By equipping military personnel with this knowledge, they are better prepared to address the multifaceted challenges encountered during their work as UN peacekeepers.  21 Mar 2024
  • [H3] Promoting international standards for private security regulation In Mozambique, DCAF is supporting adoption of the Voluntary Principles on Security and Human Rights: the leading global standard for multinational extractive companies to conduct their operations while respecting human rights. Our Director Nathalie Chuard led a high-level visit last week that joined meetings of the multi-stakeholder working groups on the Voluntary Principles in Maputo and Cabo Delgado. The working groups bring together multinationals, civil society organizations and government to identify and address key human rights challenges linked to resource extraction. 20 Mar 2024
